Anybody But Bloomberg: "Just Plead Guilty"
The latest idiocy from New York City’s jackhole mayor, Michael Blooperberg:
Everyone arrested during the Republican convention “might as well just plead guilty and go on” rather than take their fight to court, Mayor Bloomberg said yesterday.
Hundreds of people who were arrested during the GOP convention last month claim they were wrongly detained, abused by cops and held longer than necessary in order to keep them off the streets.
But Bloomberg insisted that there’s no proof that the NYPD did anything wrong. “There is absolutely no evidence whatsoever that there was any intent by any law-enforcement official to hold people any longer than was absolutely necessary to process them,” he said before marching in the Mexican Day Parade on Madison Avenue.
Bloomberg pointed out that many protesters who were arrested have already pleaded guilty. “I suspect that most of them [did so] because they know they don’t have a case,” he said. “They broke the law . . . They might as well just plead guilty and go on.
No, you unmitigated moron, it doesn’t work that way. Maybe somewhere in your past you heard the phrase “Innocent until proven guilty”? That’s not a Coca-Cola jingle, you idiot, it’s the law. Perhaps you’re able to call up the Constitution on a Bloomberg terminal? If so, then try scrolling down to the Fifth and Sixth Amendments.
So what if those arrested “don’t have a case”? They don’t need a case, you impaired imbecile — you do. The government is required to prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt (you in your limitless stupidity might prefer a phrase such as “go through the motions” or “squander resources”). You don’t like it? Too bad — grow up and keep your buffoon mouth shut.
I hope your clunkhead remarks motivate every public interest lawyer in this city to sign up and represent the people arrested (people who, before your inane comment, would have received exactly zero sympathy from me). I hope they clog the system until the District Attorneys are so swamped with cases that they will “just dismiss the charges” or be pressured into “slap on the wrist” plea bargains.
Mayor Blooperberg, you are just plain dumb. Please stop going out of your way to prove it.
Is it Election Day 2005 yet?
UPDATE: Volokh thinks I should have toned it down. Nope. Also see here.
I don’t hurl invective around a lot — I can count on one hand the targets of my undiluted venom: Blooperberg, the Vatican, RoP, hypocritical homophobes, and the Forces of Darkness. Otherwise, I try to be reasonable and professional as a blogger (e.g., this post). And there were worse things I could have called Hizzoner but didn’t.
But Bloomberg has consistently shot his mouth off since the day he took office. He is, in fact, “just plain dumb.” Perhaps one has to live here and endure his nonsense day after day to understand.
I stand by the legal and political reasoning as well. You can be stone dead guilty…you could have confessed on air during both “60 Minutes” and “60 Minutes II.” You still have every right to demand a trial, and it is utterly disgraceful for an elected official to say what Bloomberg said.
