On Days Silent and Otherwise
So let me get this straight clear: If gays are only whatever percentage of the population (let’s say 5%), then why exactly do anti-gay activists feel a need to match every single gay event one-for-one?
Irked by the success of the nationwide Day of Silence, which seeks to combat anti-gay bias in schools, conservative activists are launching a counter-event this week called the Day of Truth aimed at mobilizing students who believe homosexuality is sinful.
Participating students are being offered T-shirts with the slogan “The Truth Cannot be Silenced” and cards to pass out to classmates Thursday — the day following the Day of Silence — declaring their unwillingness to condone “detrimental personal and social behavior.”
Now of course “Day of Truth” is a pompous, arrogant — and false — description of what the anti-gay groups are doing. Depending on your mood, “Day of Opinion” or “Day of Dogma” or “Day of Gay-Bashing” would all be closer to, um, “Truth.” Details, details.
On the other hand, to the extent that the “Day of Truth” fosters discussion, debate, and exposes the contradictions and hidden agendas of the bigots, then I say bring it on.
POST SCRIPT: On this “Day of Silence,” let’s also pause and reflect that, for the the gay youth who, unable to deal with the conservatives’ idea of “Truth,” choose, not a lifestyle, but suicide, every day is a “Day of Silence.” So too for Matthew Shepard’s family.
UPDATE: The results are in:
- gay-friendly Day of Silence = 450,000 participants at 4,000 schools
- gay-hostile Day of “Truth” = 1,150 participants at 350 schools
As I’ve said before. They’re on the wrong side of history, and they know it. That’s why they’re so fanatically desperate to eke out what victories they can, while they can.
There’s another term for that: death throes.

No one has to condone the behavior of another, no matter how high or low he defines "detrimental", but at what point does a person lose all sense of rational discourse and involvement in civilization to believe that
preachingscreaming at everyone or legislating the dismissal of rights or bashing someone's skull are not sinful? If that's the God they want me to meet, I'll take my chances in Hell.
