A Stitch in Haste

Another quick reminder that the “Religion of Peace” is not just about al Qaeda:

A Pakistani man and some of his relatives chopped off his wife’s feet after accusing her of being promiscuous, police said on Saturday.

The woman survived the gruesome attack, the latest in a wave of assaults that have raised international concern about the plight of women in Pakistan, particularly in conservative rural areas.

The 32-year-old woman told police her feet were chopped off on June 24 by her husband, her father-in-law, a brother-in-law and two others after they accused her of being “of bad character,” a euphemism for promiscuous.

President Pervez Musharraf, who is trying to project Pakistan as a moderate and progressive Muslim nation, has condemned violence against women and said his government was committed to ensuring victims got justice.

Two hasty stitches:

First of course is the barbaric act itself and the irrational accommodative stance of the “Religion of Peace” crowd. Yes there are a lot of Muslims, and yes incidents such as this are (somewhat) rare and (somewhat) isolated. But that doesn’t mean that there is no conclusion to be drawn. This may be rare Islam, but it’s also pure Islam. Which suggests that the best policy is to make pure Islam as rare as possible.

Second is the rather brazen example of what others call the “al Reuters” effect: The article goes out of its way to avoid describing this despicable act as an Islamic religious rite or the perpetrators (and victim) as Muslim. The word “Muslim” appears only once:

“Pakistan as a moderate and progressive Muslim nation”

Yeah right. If they want to project Pakistan as a “moderate and progressive Muslim nation,” then perhaps they can start by buying time on al Jazeera to publicly televise the trial and imprisonment of these fiends.

But somehow I doubt I’ll be setting my TiVo for that anytime soon.
