Anti-Gay Bigotry Quote of the Day
“Does he really want to suggest that over half of the United States Senate is a crew of bigots?”
–Senator Orrin Hatch, responding to a remark from Senator Ted Kennedy, equating a vote for the Marriage Protection Amendment with “writing bigotry into the Constitution.”
First of all, it wasn’t over half; the vote was 49-48 (an unequivocally humiliating defeat for the bigots, who had hoped for a clear majority of the 100 senators).
But more importantly, I don’t personally think (nor do I believe that Ted Kennedy personally thinks) that “over half” less than half of the United States Senate “is a crew of bigots.”
They are a crew of hack politicians who pander to a crew of bigots.
I abstain from voting on which is worse.
Now about Hatch’s flag-burning amendment…

Your analysis is spot-on. It's hard to believe he could be so dense, though I dare say I'm not surprised that someone attempting to use the document designed to protect inidividuals from the intrusive power of government to eliminate individual rights would open himself up to such valid responses. The truth certainly hurts.
Of course, if he understood language, he'd know that the "traditional" marriage he thinks he's defending isn't really that traditional, given the long history of marriage in all it forms. If Sen. Hatch doesn't have to be precise, why should Sen. Kennedy be held to such a standard? Aside from the fact that Sen. Kennedy is closer to the truth than Sen. Hatch. Mind you, it's low standard when Sen. Kennedy is closer to the truth.
A pox on all of them.
