Just like segregationism was anathema -- even to its supporters -- 20 years later, so shall anti-gay marriage amendments be.

You will have Republican and Democratic politicians who complained about "too much, too fast" or "overruling the will of the people" insisting, by 2017 or so, that they were always in favor of gay rights and "fought behind the scenes for legal equality."

Karl Rove will insist that he never, ever opposed gay marriages and struggled mightily within the GOP to oppose the bigots.

Bill Clinton will say his signing of the DOMA was "forced by hatemongers" and that he really, the whole time, was working behind the scenes to make full gay marriage a reality.

People who are opposed to the equality under the law of gay people will be viewed much like KKKers are viewed today -- a bizarre, out of touch, scary freak show.

DOn't worry eric. Nothing I've heard suggests that the Mass amendment stands even the remotest chance of passing. After all they had to resort to fraud to enough names on the petition and even then they scarcely managed. All around the country opinion polls are confirming that time continues to be in our favor. Even here in VA where the worst marriage amendment yet will most likely pass next week, opinions are changing rapidly. Will it be rapidly enough to ward of the passage of the amendment, proabbly not, but the fact that there is any question at all is evidence of a pretty substansive change here.
