"We Will Never, Ever Betray You…"

Wow, just wow:

For my fellow Americans who are gay — I just advise you how Bill Clinton treated your cause in 1993 after you went flat out for him in 1992. You will be betrayed again, if you are fool enough to back Democrats in 2008. True, we conservative Christians might not seem the logical home for you, but you do know where we stand, we are ready to compromise and we will never, ever betray you.

Let’s get one thing clear: Non-partisan non-Democratic gays like me are entitled, indeed obligated, to remind gay Democrats just what Democratic politicians have and have not done for gays in the past.

But that is not the domain of conservative Christians, who have waged jihad against gays for the past several years, pandering to the most ignorant, most vicious, most un-Christian elements of their base.

You compare yourself to Democratic politicians? You equate their “do little that is good” with your “do much that is evil”?

How dare you.

Almost all conservative Christians obsess over hurting us politically. Many obsess over hurting us economically. A few hurt us physically. Some are willing to sacrifice children for the sake of hurting us. A handful would gladly send us to the gas chambers.

But you will never, ever, betray us? (Your italics, not mine.)

Save that insane blather for the Log Cabin Republicans. Leave the gay Democrats to me. I’ve earned the right to critique them. You’ve earned nothing but the right to see your grandchildren apologize for your sins.

  1. "You've earned nothing but the right to see your grandchildren apologize for your sins."

All's I can say is, wow. Stinging.

  2. "True, we conservative Christians might not seem the logical home for you, but you do know where we stand, we are ready to compromise and we will never, ever betray you."

I suppose that it's a matter of semantics. putting a gun in someones face and pulling the trigger isn't betrayal, your intentions are pretty clear. It's a shame that all conservatives are portrayed as homophobes. Some of us don't care and think there are bigger issues to deal with. People who trip over this kind of curb are pathetic at best.

  3. Redsol1:

"Not caring" isn't exactly praiseworthy either. "First they came for the…" and all that.

  4. Ditto what David_Z said.

  5. Kip:

"Not caring" is different than "Feeding to the wolves". My personal views are different than most conservatives. My point is I don't care what you do, and neither should the government. The government shouldn't be protecting nor promoting certain rights for certain groups, but should be protecting the rights of all unobtrusively.

  6. Wow.

For what it's worth, Mr. Noonan responds in the comments section. There's probably enough ammo in there for several posts. I think I'm going to have a few additional words to say, especially this passage that he wrote:

And no one is banning gay marriage or gay adoption – what is sweeping the nation is a popular demand that the courts not be allowed to overturn centuries of settled law on a liberal whim. When I say we're ready to compromise, I mean that – there isn't one in ten conservatives who won't work out some sort of legal mechanism to allow same sex couples to pool their assets and liabilities…but we won't allow a tiny minority to overturn what marriage is, nor will we sit idly by while the left attempts another Roe end-run around the constitution.

  7. There isn't one in ten conservatives who won't work out some sort of legal mechanism to allow same sex couples to pool their assets and liabilities?

Nebraska: “Only marriage between a man and a woman shall be valid or recognized in Nebraska. The uniting of two persons of the same sex in a civil union, domestic partnership or other similar same-sex relationship shall not be valid or recognized in Nebraska.”

Note the "uniting of…similar same-sex relationship" scheme. And note that this paves the way for domestic partnerships and civil unions…for heterosexual couples.

Virginia: "This Commonwealth and its political subdivisions shall not create or recognize a legal status for relationships of unmarried individuals that intends to approximate the design, qualities, significance, or effects of marriage. Nor shall this Commonwealth or its political subdivisions create or recognize another union, partnership, or other legal status to which is assigned the rights, benefits, obligations, qualities, or effects of marriage."

    Note the "legal status" language.

Michigan: "To secure and preserve the benefits of marriage for our society and for future generations of children, the union of one man and one woman in marriage shall be the only agreement recognized as a marriage or similar union for any purpose."

Note the "for any purpose" language.

Ohio: "This state and its political subdivisions shall not create or recognize a legal status for relationships of unmarried individuals that intends to approximate the design, qualities, significance or effect of marriage."

So I think it is safe to say that there are many, many more people than "one in ten" conservatives who oppose any legal mechanism, right down to the right to contract.

  8. I left a very simple comment in response to that:

"You might want to quit while you're behind."

  9. Well put Kip.

I can't leave this alone though so I'll probably develop some thoughts of my own.

Alec's stealing some of my thunder also. ;) All kidding aside, you make good points and that guy is just clueless.

  10. There isn't one in ten conservatives who won't work out some sort of legal mechanism to allow same sex couples to pool their assets and liabilities?

    Nope, I'd say it's more like 9 in 10.

  11. Wow, Kip.

I used to say if I missed reading your blog for a day, I missed a lot. Now I see, if I miss it for even a few hours, I miss a lot!

Good grief. My jaw's on the floor.

We'll blog this on Outright's blog as well.
