This is one of those weeks where we must be serious for a moment:
In a civilized city, in a civilized nation, in a civilized century. Or so we like to think.
Do you agree with kaysea81 that: (1) The incident was not really motivated by hate, and (2) “don’t fight back”?

It's not about how hard the punch is.
I agree with kaysea81. I would not hit the attacker back, but I would have shot him.
Bash…
KipEsquire recently posted this video from kaysea81: kaysea81 was gay bashed and is proposing not responding to violence with more violence. Kip asks: Do you agree with kaysea81 that: (1) The incident was not really motivated by hate, and (2)…
would agree with kaysea81 on both. was punched twice when much younger on the streets of new orleans – in one case, i looked like easy prey; the other case, i still have no idea why the guy left his girlfriend to come swing at me.
not swinging back for pragmatic reasons – 3 vs. 1 is very poor odds.
I think he's right about hate if we can take hate apart and talk about what motivates it. I think you can "hate" premeditated murder, "hate" birthday cake, "hate" the smell of a perm. But in order to hate a person, you have to know that person. And if you know that person, odds are you don't "hate" him so much as resent something he said or did.
Calling someone a faggot and hitting him probably has little to do with hate. It has to do with the attacker's issues with his peers, his self-esteem, his family, and his culture. And nothing to do with kaysea81 at all.
But "hate crime" is a lot tidier than "poor-self-esttem-motivated crime."
Reverend Fred Phelps, on the other hand, well that's probably hate. Who the hell knows what motivates that guy?
And kaysea81's right about hitting back too. It only perpetuates the cycle of violence. The only way to deal with people like that guy effectively is to educate him, and in an attack situation, that's impossible. So just walk away, if you're able.
I think there are plenty of good people in America, but there are also plenty of bad people in America and the bad ones are the ones who seem to have all the power and be in these positions to block things that you and I need. Because this is the situation, you and I have to preserve the right to do what is necessary to bring an end to that situation, and it doesn't mean that I advocate violence, but at the same time I am not against using violence in self-defense. I don't even call it violence when it's self-defense, I call it intelligence.
