The Era of Big Government …

September 16th, 2008 · 1 Comment

…is just beginning:

Republican presidential candidate John McCain says Wall Street’s financial turmoil is the result of unchecked corporate greed.

The Republican says government must protect the public from investment schemes too complex for people to understand or regulate. [Source.]

“What we’ve seen the last few days is nothing less than the final verdict on an economic philosophy that has completely failed,” Obama said. “And I am running for president of the United States because the dreams of the American people must not be endangered any more. It’s time to put an end to a broken system in Washington that is breaking the American economy. It’s time for change that makes a real difference in your lives.” [Source.]

“Protect.” “Endangered.” The vocabulary of the War or Terror — now applied to investment bankers, mortgage brokers and insurance salesmen.

When threats and enemies are in short supply, they must be manufactured (cf., gays and illegal immigrants). McCain and Obama, if they deem it politically expedient, would have you think that there is little or no fundamental difference between an al Qaeda terrorist and a Wall Street stockbroker.

Are you gullible enough to believe either of them?

    Thank you for the link.

It is bad enough that some people out there are pulling every strawman argument out there against free markets to explain what's going on (ignoring that government has caused many of these problems). It's worse that a good number of people, especially those that are left-leaning although they are not the only ones, clamor to see the government to do something about this and react unfavorably when they do not.

Now, we have politicians in all their populist glory throwing matches atop this powder keg. Lovely. Nothing good ever comes out of situations like this.
