Thoughts on the McCain "Suspension" Stunt

A collection of comments and Tweets I have left here and there:

1. Regarding the utter nonsense that McCain is “needed” in Washington: McCain may be a major-party presidential nominee, but he is not part of the Senate leadership and is not even a member (let alone chairman or ranking member) of any committee relevant to the bailout negotiations. He is, in this instance, a senator — and nothing more, just one of a hundred. So when (if?) a vote is scheduled, then let him race to Washington to be there. In the meantime, he can still make speeches — whether policy-oriented, inspirational or his typical anti-Obama smears — from anywhere the campaign might take him.

2. McCain has not cast a single Senate vote, on anything, since April. So much for the “he is a legislator, after all” canard. As a point of reference, Obama has not cast a vote since July. Given that McCain secured his nomination months before Obama did, shouldn’t that gap have worked the other way around?

3. Friday’s debate was scheduled to be about foreign policy. Why should “Mr. Experience” balk at the notion of a last-minute switch to economic policy? Sorry for the obnoxious, bailout-inspired pun, but who’s buying this crap?

4. David Letterman is of course correct: Why not let Sarah Palin campaign, alone, in McCain’s place? Who’s buying this crap?

5. Keith Olbermann (filling in for McCain) is of course correct: If one debate is canceled, McCain will push for it to be the vice presidential debate. Who’s buying this crap?

6. Lying, flat-out lying, to David Letterman (and, vicariously, to his audience): Can McCain get any more dishonorable?
