When Did the Church of England Switch from Vicars to Ayatollahs?

October 7th, 2008 · 2 Comments

Posted without much comment:

A Church of England vicar could face disciplinary action for saying gay men should have “sodomy” warnings tattooed on their bodies.

The Rev Peter Mullen, who is a parish priest and rector in the City of London, made the remarks on his blog, which has since been removed from the web under an agreement with diocesan officials. [Google cache here.]

“Let us make it obligatory for homosexuals to have their backsides tattooed with the slogan SODOMY CAN SERIOUSLY DAMAGE YOUR HEALTH and their chins with FELLATIO KILLS.”

The bigot’s response?

Despite the bishop’s rebuke, Mullen played down the posts, which he described as “light-hearted jokes”.

“I wrote some satirical things on my blog and anybody with an ounce of sense of humour or any understanding of the tradition of English satire would immediately assume that they’re light-hearted jokes. I certainly have nothing against homosexuals. Many of my dear friends have been and are of that persuasion. What I have got against them is the militant preaching of homosexuality.”

How can he possibly be a bigot, right? After all, some of his best friends are “of that persuasion”? Welcome to enlightened, urban, Twenty-First Century Anglicanism. God be praised…

One more pesky fact: Mullen is the chaplain of the London Stock Exchange. (Of course, he’ll likely soon be the former chaplain.) So we are not talking about some unknown, unimportant, “Father Ted” sort of semi-retarded flunkie banished to the countryside. This is a high-profile London vicar with a sizable audience.

Let’s hope the LSE and the C of E correct their error and reduce the size of that audience promptly.

"I certainly have nothing against homosexuals. Many of my dear friends have been and are of that persuasion. What I have got against them is the militant preaching of homosexuality.”

Do you think this is actually true? People who want others to dismiss their nonsense as humor often say they "have friends who are X" with X being the minority they targeted. Do you think there is any truth to it? I'm thinking at best he has a gay neighbor he politely avoids.

    Just wondering.

    Justin – I concur.

Whenever someone qualifies a statement with, "Some of my best friends are [black/gay/immigrants/&c.]", you can be assured he is a bigot.
