Happy New Year, Kip and all the best for 2009!
I am about the furthest thing in the world from an eco-freak. However, I do work in the field of lighting, concentrating on providing the best lighting possible while conserving energy and reducing maintenance requirements.
I see no harm in designers like me picking fixtures where the available lumens from a lamp and fixture are better-utilized. Every lumen going skyward is one not doing actual work. And I really WOULD welcome being able to see the stars in the sky again.
My opposition to politicians (lawyers on the public dole) telling me how to do my work is boundless. Let them stay out of this and let us do our jobs.
Kip, you say your work is changing. I hope mine will be too, soon, as well. My opportunity to do lighting correctly will include following the guidelines set by the Dark Skies Initiative in my desire to conserve energy and create a better environment for people. It will not be the result of someone else creating a mandate.
