True, although "credit" is itself a government-created-and-upheld idea.
I had my "identity" stolen years ago. Ever since then, every few months, a "credit bureau" publishes and distributes defamatory information about me to a wide number of individuals and corporations that negatively impacts my ability to do everything from rent to earn a living.
In a real free market, I could sue them for their defamatory statements and receive recompense. But federal laws have provided an exemption in the tort system. As a result, it's up to me to "prove my innocence" at significant expense and time every month.
Meanwhile, individuals with very high credit scores are defaulting, in droves, on their "superjumbo" and option-ARM mortgages.
So you'll forgive me if I don't assign "credit" any, um, credit.
