Sunday CuteTuber™ 2008 Year in Review

Let's take a moment to salute all those YouTubers who graced this blog on Sunday mornings in 2008:

And with that, it is with great reluctance that I must announce that I am ending Sunday CuteTuber™. The only reason is that it has become too difficult and time-consuming to find videos to feature. Despite its Google lineage, YouTube has yet to devise and implement a useful system of tagging, keywording and searching. Looking for relevant videos, in any context, is like trying to find a rubber duck in the ocean.

I might try to keep the feature going as a monthly, or at least as a sporadic occurrence when appropriate, similar to Kip Clips.

To review: There is a collaborative YouTube channel called "Five Awesome Gays," each member of which has been previously featured as a CuteTuber™.

Well, it turns out that there now is a "sequel" channel called "5SortaStraightGuys" — with very heavy emphasis on the "Sorta."

One of the five, PickThisCar, has already been featured as a CuteTuber™. That leaves four more to fill out the year.

Since this is the Sunday after Thanksgiving, let's begin with a review of the Friday after Thanksgiving:

Yes, I realize that Theoph1us mentioned "killing each other." Let's not dwell on it, shall we?

One of the topics at the gay law symposium yesterday (not to mention some of the signs at the various railles around the country) was why gays should have to settle for a "separate but equal" regime of civil unions.

To give an idea of how that debate has evolved, try to guess when this commentary was recorded:

The answer is that stylenxs recorded this video barely one year ago. And in the time since, we not only have pretty much abandoned the term "domestic partnership," but have also abandoned the idea of civil unions as a viable alternative to marriage, even as a stepping stone. Most gay rights activists now demand full marriage equality; any compromise is a compromise with injustice, hatred and bigotry.

The goal posts have moved, in a good way. Yesterday was proof positive of that.

I hope you'll forgive me for politicizing this feature two weeks in a row…

How anyone, in a civilized century and in the country once heralded as the "Shining City on a Hill," could say to someone like SanieClaws that he should be treated like a second-class citizen, that such an absurd notion should even be put to a vote, and that our greatest virtue is not protecting the rights of minorities but rather subjecting them to mob rule cloaked as "democracy," all continues to astound and depress me no end.

I've never selected a CuteTuber™ for the sole purpose of mocking the person making the video, and that's not necessarily my intention here.

Nevertheless, I think we should take a moment to reflect on the notion of our fate as a nation, and as individuals with supposedly unalienable natural rights, being decided by millions — perhaps tens of millions — of people like this:

I like The Daily Show as much as the next guy. But governance based on whom Jon Stewart mocks the most or least? A new constitutional theory: the Unitary Satirist? No thanks.

Young Michael, meanwhile, was part of a project called "First Time Voters," run by a regional newspaper in New York State. They recorded 100 such videos by 18- and even (at the time) 17-year olds. Most were, quite frankly, as depressing as this one. Peruse them at your intellectual peril.
